Powerlifters bag 14 medals in Deadlift Nationals

Odisha powerlifters bagged a whopping 14 medals, including eight gold, one silver and five bronze in the National Deadlift Championships, which concluded at Jamshedpur today. According to Odisha Powerlifting Association secretary CR Swain, Pradeep Patra secured gold in both junior and senior categories of the men’s 66kg weight class, lifting 262.5kg.

Amit Thappa too clinched a double by winning gold in 53kg sub-junior and junior categories with an effort of 185kg. Brahmapada Behera (74kg Master-I category), Supriya Rout (sub-junior women 52kg category), Priyadarshini Bisoi (sub-junior women 63kg category) and Sangita Ekka (women 72kg category) claimed the other four gold medals, lifting 220kg, 92.5kg, 122.5kg and 115kg respectively.

The lone silvers medal was pocketed by Rita Moharana, who finished second in women’s plus-84kg class with a lift of 125kg. The five silver medals were shared by Sudam Sahoo, Jitendra Behera, Satyananda Jena, Om Swarup Mohanty and Sangita Singh.

Bhubaneswar lifter Pradip Patra was adjudged the Strongman of India (Deadlift), while Odisha finished third in women’s team championship.
